2023 Cross Country Team Season in Review!!
Footlocker Western Regionals at Mt. Sac
State Championships!!
On Saturday, Cynthia Herrera went to the State Championships on a mission. Her goal was to get to State but that was not enough. She had 2 specific goals: 1- Place in the Top 25 and 2- run a faster time than she did at the Clovis Invitational back in early October. Mission Accomplished, she did both. She competed from the very beginning of the race to give herself the best opportunity to do well. She placed 16th overall and ran a time of 18:27!! That time at the State Championships is the 2nd fastest all time for a female Canyon runner behind Lauren Fleshman!! This season has been one of Legends!!

We were so close!! So Proud of their performance and effort. Our girls placed 9th overall improving from last year's 12th place finish at CIF Finals. We are bringing back 4 of the 7 back next year and we will reload to come back next year to take the next step!! Our boys team placed 8th overall and like the girls, they missed advancing by 8 points. We have 2 of our 7 coming back with our current alternates ready to continue to develop to be ready next season!! A year ago, this boys team did not get out of the league and 1 year later they made it to CIF Finals!! Very Proud of them!! Congratulations to Cynthia Herrera as she advanced to the State Championships next week. She placed 8th overall. She has had quite a season for our athletes to emulate. She has been locked in and driven since the end of track season and has not let up. From Foothill League Champion (All League Runner) to a Legend to All CIF runner to a State Finalist. Cynthia will compete on Saturday at Woodward Park at 11:00am.
CIF Finals will be raced on the Rain Course!!
Congratulations to our Boys and Girls teams as they advanced to CIF Finals!! Our boys team placed 4th in their heat and our girls placed 3rd in their heat to move on for the Championship race next Saturday at Mt. Sac. Our program is the only team in Foothill League to advance a boys and a girls team!! Congratulations to Cynthia Herrera as she becomes a Legend in our program racing to a 2nd place finish but also running a time of 18:20. The standard for a girl to become a Legend is to run faster than 18:30 at Mt. Sac!!

Saturday's League Finals at Central Park had so many highlights for our program. The amount of parent support, administrators, teachers and friends that attended did not leave disappointed. We have 2 teams advancing to CIF Prelims, 15 athletes earning All League honors and Cynthia Herrera earning the title of League Champion!! It's been over 20 years since our Canyon Cross Country program had a girls League Champion!! What a race to the wire!! What our athletes accomplished is not easy to do and all the credit goes to our athletes for putting in the hard work to get rewarded in the race that matters. Great Day to be a Cowboy !!
Thank You Seniors!! It has been our honor to have you on the team. Each one of you have improved so much from when you started on this journey of running!! More importantly you have grown up before our own eyes to young adults. So looking forward to what the future has for you!! Thank You for all the memories as we go into League Finals!! Let's finish the journey with the goals that you have set!!

Very Proud to be a Cowboy!! Our kids did fantastic!! So many parents and coaches from other teams came up to me and congratulated us on how well we did as a program!! 4 of the 6 levels placed 2nd overall as a team!! If today was League Finals, both the Varsity boys and Varsity girls would advance to CIF Prelims. Come League Finals on October 28th, in order to advance you need to finish in the Top 4!! Congratulations to Erick Leal who placed 2nd overall at the Varsity level and Cynthia Herrera who Won the meet!! Overall, the coaching staff and I are very pleased where we are at as a program. Room for improvement, of course and it will happen!! It was great to see so many Parents cheering on their athlete and the Canyon team!! Special Thanks to the Messitt family and the Hutchison family for the drinks and snacks!! A very special Thank You to Ron Hutchison for taking the lead on setting up the Canyon Canopies for our team!!
