Results from Saturday's Spring League at Burroughs HS.
Canyon 40 Glendale 33. As a former head girls basketball coach at Glendale HS, from 1989 to 1994, it was nice beating my former team. Considering only 3 varsity returners played, we did well. As a team we shot 41% from inside the arc and also 41% from the 3 point line. That is good. However our Free Throw shooting, 47% was poor. After missing 17 shots we only managed 6 offensive rebounds. This is VERY POOR. Our zone press forced some turnovers, but overall, our communication on defense was poor.
Arleta 39 Canyon 27. We got off to a poor start allowing their two best players to out score us by 16 points in the first quarter. We got it together the rest of the came. Again rebounding was an issue. We had ZERO offensive rebounds, and missed 13 shots.

Last night a rather large crowd enjoyed watching The Signal's Annual SCV All Star Game at Canyon. Our "Team Josie" defeated "Team Morgan" 61-45. Josie Regez was named Tournament MVP! Proceeds of this fundraising Tournament will go to each of the 8 SCV Basketball programs.
What a Banquet last night! A great tribute to our outstanding STUDENT athletes! Thanks to all the parent help with the meal, decorating, and cleaning up!

From The Signal: "Regez led Team Josie to a 61-44 win over Team Morgan, led by Foothill League MVP Morgan Mack. The Canyon senior added 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and a block in her second SCV All-Star Game. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to play one once more here on my home court and not only that, but also walk away with a win,” Regez said. For Team Josie, Saugus senior Destiny Onovo also played an MVP-caliber game as she finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Coaching also played a factor in the win for Team Josie as Canyon coach Jessica Haayer and Regez have had a winning formula for four years now. “Coach Jessica Haayer really contributed to our win tonight,” Regez said. “She drew up one play and it worked perfectly. When I’m on the court and I get to look at the bench and see her, it’s great. We’ve gone through a lot the last four years and it was great having her coach me one more time.”

I will share a link to donate shortly. Thank you for your support and prayers. I pray for all of those battling the hardest thing I know of - cancer. Keep the fight on - everyday is a battle!

The tournament schedule will be released on Monday, December 11th. Teams who have not submitted their entry fee will not be scheduled for the event.
COACHES REGISTRATION
The head coach or a designated representative must register between 4:00 PM-6:00 PM on Sunday, December 17th, at the Arizona Grand Resort in the meeting room Palm 3AB. Palm 3AB is located on the third floor of the Conference Center.
At this time you will receive event rosters; coach and athlete credentials; and important schedule information.
SHOT CLOCKS
The AIA has implemented a 35 shot-clock, which will be used for all games. 10 second back-cout will still be in effect.
Shot clock will reset to full 35-seconds when any of the following occurs:
- A missed shot hits the rim or flange, and possession is gained by either team.
- When a violation occurs.
- After a turnover
- A single personal foul.
- A single technical foul assessed to the defensive team.
- All jump ball situations where the a.p.-arrow favors the defense.
- Defensive player causes a held ball, and the arrow favors the defensive team.
- The shot fails to hit the rim or flange.
- The ball is deflected out of bounds by a defensive player.
- A player is injured or loses a contact lens.
- The end of a time-out.
- Any double personal or double technical fouls where possession does not change.
All held balls that favor the defense reset the clock; it doesn't reset if the offense retains possession.
The shot clock will be used the entire game, including extra periods.
The shot clock will be turned off if less than 35 seconds remain in the period.
The shot clock will be turned off when in the 4th quarter and the mercy rule is in effect.
WATER, BASKETBALLS AND FOOD
Please note the following: 1) a NIKE game ball will be provided, but teams are responsible for bringing basketballs for warm-up; 2) please plan on bringing bottled drinking water; 3) the playing venue does not allow outside food.

Canyon wins both games at the Bishop Gorman - Las Vegas Showcase. On Friday they beat Coronado HS of Henderson, NV, 67-47. Josie Regez had 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. KoKo Booker added 19 points and 6 rebounds. Izzy Escribano had 15 points and 7 assists. On Saturday they beat Basic Academy HS 60-57. Josie scored 26 points, and Izzy had 24 combining for 50 of our 60 points.
Look at this Hudl breakdown. Granted we did not have Josie, and Izzy dislocated her finger. BUT, Buena beat us in four categories. Shooting %, Turnovers, Offensive Rebounds, and Defensive Rebounds. It is IMPOSSIBLE to win if this happens!

Please be at the game an hour and 15 minutes prior to the start time.
Frosh will start their Tournament at Burroughs HS this week (Burroughs Frosh Tournament). It is a JV tournament and they will battle everyday! Duarte is not responding regarding the JV tournament so please hold off on planning for that tournament, I have reached out several times with no response.
We will depart to Las Vegas (Bishop Gorman HS 5959 S Hualapai Way Las Vegas NV) at 7am on Friday from Canyon High School. Please be on time as we have to coordinate rides and what not. A great Kids Camp today!
Saturday in Palm Desert
We lost to Beckman 30-42 STATS
We lost to Mira Costa 25-55
Desert Heat Classic Results:
We lost to Flintridge Prep 32-42.
We blew a 7 point first half lead and we were out scored 13-30 in the second half. Fatigue and lack of defensive intensity and poor communication were key factors. Our bench was silent showing little enthusiasm. Jasmine Williams had a team high 11 points and a team high 6 rebounds. The highlight was, for the first time all summer, we had 7 people score at least 2 points.
We beat Burroughs 39-21
Josie led us in scoring with 18 points. Aneesa Sayan scored 12 points. She was 3 for 3 inside the paint and 2 for 2 outside for 100%. Why she doesn't shoot more is beyond me. KoKo Booker had a great game defensively with 7 steals, 4 deflections, a Block, and 2 Assists. And the bench was LOUD!
We lost to Brentwood last night 35-46.Izzy Escribano led us
in scoring with 18 points. We were 2 of 19 from the 3 point
line (10.5%) and only 52% inside the line. STATS
We lost to Harvard Westlake 40-49 at Burroughs. STATS
JVs beat Palibos and Faith Baptist Monday at Burroughs
in scoring with 18 points. We were 2 of 19 from the 3 point
line (10.5%) and only 52% inside the line. STATS

Varsity will be going to Palm Springs on July 14th-July 15th. We will be staying at the Homewood Suites (36999 Cook St, Palm Desert, Ca 92211). Paul and Jan Broneer and Emma Allen will be traveling with the girls to Palm Springs. Please coordinate travel accommodations with each other.
Sunday July 2nd - We beat Great Oak 52-27. Izzy Escribano scored 38 points! This could be the most points scored in a Canyon Game by a freshman in program history. We lost to Balboa Blue 34-38 with Izzy scoring 23 points.
No one else had more than 3 points. Josie sat out with an injured ankle.
Saturday July 1st - We beat Bonita 31-25, Josie had 15 points
and Izzy scored 11. We lost to last year's CIF Div 2 Champions, La Salle,
in overtime 41-46. Josie re-injured her ankle early in the game and only
had 5 points. Izzy stepped up and scored 24, and KoKo added 9.
